One Month

Happy one month birthday to my little W!

I guess this would be a good time to say a little about how things are going for us so far.

Leaving the house
Major development! This week we left the house on multiple occasions. The pediatrician had advised us to stay around the house for a month and let W adjust to our family bacteria (yum) before heading out into the world. Consequently, the only place he had been before Wednesday was the hospital for doctor visits (his and mine). Thank God the hospital has a Starbucks as this made it seem sort of like a real outing!

Anyway, this week, he went to the Registro Civil to get his birth certificate, to my ladies' Bible Study where he was welcomed despite not being a "woman of the word" and to the mall. This has been exciting but tiring for baby and new mom. Fortunately for him, he can sleep in the stroller. I am not so lucky!

Cloth diapering
As I wrote, we are using cloth diapers. gDiapers to be precise. At the beginning, we went through the disposable diapers we were given at baby showers. This was helpful because the small gDiapers are for 8 lbs and up, so it took a (very short) time to get there. We also use disposable diapers at night so we don't have to change them as often. Right now we are using BioBaby which are eco-friendly diapers we received at a shower. But, we're on the last package so it looks like we're almost ready to go full-time on the gDiapers. I think that will be OK because 1. we have the option of the biodegradeable inserts which are more absorbent than the cloth and 2. things are thankfully slowing down a bit in the poop department, which I had heard is typical for the one-month mark.

Eating
All the time. Seriously. This boy loves to eat and it shows. We weighed him on the Wii last weekend since we don't have a scale, and he came in at over 10 lbs. I am not sure I believe that but I am sure he's in the ballpark. Anyway, we are exclusively breastfeeding and I am happy to say it has been going great. I have heard a lot of horror stories from people about bad latches and whatnot, but clearly this child was born knowing how to eat. Sometimes he can hang out on the boob for more than an hour. Once I watched two hour-long shows and he was still there! We have started giving him a pacifier (soothie) which has helped somewhat as I suspected he was not always hungry so much as looking for something to hang onto.

Sleeping
Um, this is going OK I guess, as OK as it can! W has slept up to 5 hours at a stretch but recently has been wanting to eat every three hours or so. Also, he has been waking up at 5 in the morning to grunt loudly for a long period of time. The pediatrician recommended some probiotic drops because it seems like gas, so we'll see if that helps (please, God!)

Overall W is a dream baby! He is getting more and more alert, making adorable noises and loving things like his bouncy chair, looking at the window and falling asleep on grandma and dad. We love him so much!!
