The B.O.B.

The latest ultrasound results are in and it's confirmed (well, as confirmed as these things can be before we actually meet our child) - Fran and I are having a Big Ol' Baby.

At our appointment last week, our ultrasound doctor (who I love so much it borders on being weird) turned to us and said, "Well, which one of you has the big head?" Fran and I both pointed at me. She went on to add that the baby's head was big, but not disproportionately big, which means the whole baby is large. This was an ultrasound at 31 weeks but the head was the size of a 35-weeker. And she estimated the weight at more than five pounds. She turned to Francisco and said, "Don't worry, the next one will probably be just like you!" (My husband is not as large and big-headed as I, which is probably good because if he were, who knows how big this little monster would be!!)

Yesterday we went to my regular ob-gyn appointment and she saw these latest ultrasound results for the first time. And she let it slip... the c-word. (NO, not that c-word you dirty bird.) She did say a few things like you can't be sure about the baby's weight from the ultrasound, and that just because the baby was big didn't mean I wasn't big enough to deliver it naturally, but she did say the word "cesarean" more during that appointment than she probably had during the entire course of my prenatal care up until now. She said we'd get to 38 weeks or so and see how things look.

I know there's nothing I can do to make the baby smaller now, and there's probably not much I could have done along the way apart from taking up smoking or refusing to eat, but I left that appointment a bit worried. During all my preparation, I have always known I can't control everything that happens, but I never really entertained this type of situation. I know big babies can be born naturally, but it would be hard to insist on that if my doctor has doubts - even if I don't agree with her doubts!

P.S. No good pics to share from the ultrasound since the baby had a hand in front of his/her face the whole time and wouldn't let us see.

If you were in the US I would be shouting "No no no no!" as a gut reaction, but you aren't and so I don't know what the trends are there. Hmmm. I'm skeptical though. Too many stories I've heard of 9 lb predictions when the baby comes out barely hitting 7 lbs.

I think (and hope!) you're right. I have heard about a lot of overestimates. On the other hand, I am a pretty big girl. I don't know why I even entertained the idea that I would have a smallish baby! But my body should be able to handle it, right?

Mexico has a very very high number of cesareans, although my doctor doesn't, which is what gave me pause. I should have talked to her more about it but this appointment came at the end of such a frustrating and discouraging day that I was just ready to roll over and cry instead.

I know, I never expected that! But I have also heard she's a bit tough on first-timers until she sees you "can do it." I am not throwing the towel in yet!

There was a woman in Niles, Michigan a few weeks ago who had a 17 pound baby boy, by C-section of course. When Brenda had our first son he weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces. 4 years later when Garner came along he tipped the scales at 8 pounds 10 ounces. Shortly after that Brenda said..."just so you know we're only having two kids". She seemed concerned about what a 3rd child might weigh. Keep a positive attitude Sloane, I'm sure what is best for you and the baby is what will happen and everything will be fine.

OK, I am pretty committed to a natural delivery but I think if the kid weighed 17 lbs I would have to rethink that for sure!!

My dear Sloanie, I just read the latest after our short conversation tonite. Try not to worry--overall Annie was probably wise to bring the C., word into the conversation. Either way, things will be okay. I had no mention that you might be a C-baby, but by the 3rd day I was feeling much better. And you were such a healthy girl!
