I can still see my toes! Oh, hey Puffy.

I've reached that point — visibly pregnant. Actually, I've been here a couple of weeks now. And as I passed from that "is she or isn't she?" stage to the "oh-yes-she-is" stage, it's been super funny to see people's reactions. Because I work at a school, a lot of people came back to my big ol' belly where before there was a svelte Weight Watchers waistline. I could tell people were like, "Wow, either she's pregnant or she has seriously fallen off the WW wagon." (The answer, of course, is both!)

I am personally one of those people who will not comment on someone else's pregnancy until it is confirmed first, or possibly if the person's in active labor. I've never made that mistake, and I don't intend to. I've heard enough anecdotes that I don't want to be wrong. That's probably why my absolute favorite reaction so far was (after summer break): "HEY! You look greeeeaaat!" said with a smile and a big look of curiosity. (This was from a former WW buddy BTW.) I let a few seconds of suspenseful silence pass before replying, "Yes, well, I'm pregnant!" She was so relieved. "I thought so!" she said. Anyway, I loved her approach. Others have included:

• Is it my imagination or are you pregnant?
• I heard a rumor about your family situation!
• Is that what I think it is?

And much more in that vein. All of which were fine, of course, because I AM pregnant. Usually now when people nervously ask me if I'm pregnant, I just say "lucky for you, yes!"

I have a working theory that Mexicans are more likely to go out on a limb and just ask, while gringos are a little more scared to be wrong. Mexicans in general have less of a complex about commenting on a person's physical appearance, so that makes sense. Unfortunately, I don't have enough evidence to back that up, and now that I am looking totally preggo, I will have to stop my data collection, at least until next time around!
